10 GCSE REVISION TECHNIQUES

1. Motivation is the first and hardest step towards revising for GCSEs. Think ahead to life after the exams and how you will be feeling then. Remember that preparation and hard work will pay off giving you the results you deserve.

2. Plan your revision with a timetable made up of 40-60 minute sessions with a short break in between each one. Revising the same subject for hours at a time might sound like a good idea, but you retain the most information in the first hour, so keep each session focused.

3. Summarise the syllabus of each subject and as you complete a section tick it off or cross it out. Don't waste time learning unnecessary material that isn't on the syllabus or anything you have been told will not be in the exam.

4. Past exam papers are a good methodical way of analysing question and answer techniques from a real situation. Teachers will advise you as to how to use past papers in the most effective way as a revision aid and never assume that just because a question was in a previous year's paper that it won't crop up again the following year.

5. Revising with a group in structured after school sessions or even at home with a friend is a good confidence builder if you feel the pressure of GCSE revision overwhelming. It's easy to think that you are the only one who can't concentrate or hasn't done enough work but everyone is in the same situation and equally apprehensive.

6. GCSE subject revision books or CDs can be an excellent additional resource. Podcasts are also a great way of downloading what you need to learn in small manageable chunks and taking it with you on your mp3 player. For some people, an hour on the bus listening to a podcast can be more beneficial than reading through coursework for an afternoon.

7. Internet bite size websites have done most of the preparation work for you and present each subject in an easy to access form with just the right amount of information in each revision module.

8. Diagrams and revision cards are a traditional and effective way of making key points easier to remember and the use of acronyms, word association or mnemonics work well with these methods.

9. Keeping track of your progress makes it look and feel as though you are achieving something and working towards a goal. Draw up a comprehensive list and tick things off or cross them out when you are confident that each section has been revised sufficiently.

10. Set a target for each revision day and decide on a reward for yourself such as watching a film or meeting up with friends if you mange to achieve your goal. Keep things balanced and in perspective and remember that it is equally important to have some downtime to relax and enjoy yourself as well as putting in the hard work to revise for your GCSEs.

Passive smoking kills 600,000 people a year: Research

Around one in a hundred deaths worldwide is due to passive smoking, which kills an estimated 600,000 people a year, World Health Organization researchers revealed.

In the first study to assess the global impact of second-hand smoke, WHO experts found that children are more heavily exposed to second-hand smoke than any other age-group, and around 165,000 of them a year die because of it. The WHO researchers looked at data from 192 countries for their study.

To get comprehensive data from all 192, they had to go back to 2004. They used mathematical modeling to estimate deaths and the number of years lost of life in good health. Worldwide, 40 percent of children, 33 percent of non-smoking men and 35 percent non-smoking women were exposed to second-hand smoke in 2004, researchers found.

This exposure was estimated to have caused 379,000 deaths from heart disease, 165,000 from lower respiratory infections, 36,900 from asthma and 21,400 from lung cancer. For the full impact of smoking, these deaths should be added to the estimated 5.1 million deaths a year attributable to active tobacco use, the researchers said.

Harry Potter 7 Realeased ! But who cares...They ruined the essence didnt they ?

Harry potter 7 was realeased a few days back but the question remains why love it anymore
They're are several reasons i hate the movies
They ruined the sensation of the book
The old Dumbledore was much suitable and ideal for the film but i heard he died
Ok so they needed a new dumbledore
Fine !
But atleast they didn't have to make him so charismatic and enegetic
He should be portrayed as an old humble man not some power ranger  !
Next Harry Potter is supposed to have long hair
Not get his head shaved every two to three movies !
And if he does his hair should grow back
They just missed it !

One other horrible thing they did with the movie was that they started changing the location of shooting
One movie its in a vast lush plain
The next (Fire of goblet)
Its in a series of snowy peaks with deep valleys
I mean cant they keep still !
One other thing i loathe about the movies is that in the first and second movies they keep the hall snug and with plenty of light
In the rest of the movies i think they changed the lightning director....He made a mess out of that one
Moving on the atmosphere of the whole movie starts to become gloomy
The movie had many things which the book didnt have
and they're were many things in the books which the movies didn't have
I mean J.K Rowling should have had been the co-director or something

I understand you cant squeeze a six hundred paged novel into a two hour movie but come on
They missed some really good parts and the reality is that the movies have failed to deliver the essence of the book !
I am so sorry for them...I dont understand how J.K Rowling let them get away with it
I was one of those who read the entire series like mad since i was a kid
but I stopped watching harry Potter films since the goblet of fire ! Because of the above mentioned reasons
Maybe if i get the time I'll watch the rest but the trailers ain't up to my mark or at least up to mark of the book.
Then I'll tell you all about it...
If you don't agree make me right by giving comments below !

BRAINS are all you need !

An old man lived alone in small village in India . He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man sent a telegram to his son and mentioned his situation.

Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate of doing the garden work due to my old age, moreover your mother is no more, or else we used to do it together .

I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot.  If you were here, all my troubles would have been over.
Shortly, the old man received this telegram:

“For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden!! The Guns MAY be buried there !!!!”

With love
Son

The next morning, A dozen FBI agents and local police officers showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns.

Confused, the old man sent another telegram to his son telling him what is this, why you did this nasty things and police came and asked me so many questions, and they dug all the field and went but didn’t find any Guns which you mentioned,
His son’s reply was:

“Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you from here.”

International Day for Tolerance

Oh we missed the day !
The International Day for Tolerance was observed on (Nov 16).
The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observance declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance. It is observed on 16 November.
At the initiative of UNESCO, 1995 was declared the UN Year for Tolerance, and it saw the launching of a world-wide campaign for tolerance and non-violence.
The International Day for Tolerance grew out of the momentum of that Year. Building tolerance and trust in diverse communities is not done overnight, but takes time and commitment. Building tolerance requires access to education. Intolerance is often rooted in ignorance and fear: of the unknown, and of the "other", such as other cultures, religions and nations. Intolerance is also closely linked to an exaggerated sense of self-worth and pride: notions taught and learned at an early age.
Therefore in the coming years, greater emphasis needs to be placed on educating children about tolerance, human rights and fundamental freedoms. But education does not end in school; adults -- firstly as individuals capable of committing acts of intolerance, but more importantly in their capacity as parents, law-makers and law-enforcement officials -- also need to be considered a priority target of our educational efforts.
An International Day for Tolerance can serve as an annual occasion for tolerance education as well as for wider social and political reflection and debate on local and global problems of intolerance. It is a moment to take stock of the progress made during the year and to propose fresh policies to close remaining gaps.

Awesome Joke =D

John and David were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, John suddenly dove into the deep end. He sunk to the bottom and stayed there.

David promptly jumped in to save him. He swam to the bottom of the pool and pulled John out. The Medical Director came to know of David’s heroic act. He immediately ordered that David be discharged from the mental hospital as he considered him to be okay.

The doctor told David, “We have good news and bad news for you, David! The good news is that we are going to discharge you because you have regained your senses. Since you were able to jump in and save another patient you must be mentally stable. The bad news is that the patient whom you saved, Mr. John, hung himself in the bathroom, and died”.

David replied, “Doctor he didn’t hang himself, I hung him there to dry”.

The study has emerged as good news for potato lovers. The study has outlined that there is no clear evidence to consolidate that claim that potatoes, when cooked in a healthy manner, results in weight gain.

Walnuts may lower heart attack risk

Feeling stressed? Eat walnuts….that's the advice from a new study, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Researchers found that a diet rich in walnuts and walnut oil may help the body to deal better with stressful situations.

Sheila West, associate professor of bio behavioral health, said this: "People who show an exaggerated biological response to stress are at higher risk of heart disease... We wanted to find out if omega 3-fatty acids from plant sources would blunt cardiovascular responses to stress."

Their research showed that adding walnuts and walnut oil to the diet could lower both resting blood pressure, and blood pressure responses to stress.

Walnuts are a rich source of fiber, antioxidants, and unsaturated fatty acids, particularly alpha linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. And, it's probable that these compounds are responsible for the beneficial effects.

Ten Things To LEARN From

1. SOLDIER : SIR  WE ARE SURROUNDED  FROM  ALL  SIDES  BY ENEMIES ,
MAJOR : EXCELLENT !  WE CAN ATTACK IN ANY DIRECTION.

2. EVERY ONE  KNOWS  ABOUT  ALEXANDER  GRAHAM BELL  WHO  INVENTED THE
TELEPHONE, BUT  HE  NEVER  MADE  A  CALL  TO  HIS  FAMILY.  BECAUSE, HIS
WIFE  AND DAUGHTER  WERE  DEAF. THAT’S  LIFE ”  LIVE  FOR  OTHERS ” .

3.  THE   WORST  IN  LIFE  IS  ”ATTACHMENT ” IT  HURTS  WHEN  YOU  LOSE
IT. THE   BEST  THING  IN  LIFE  IS ” LONELINESS ”  BECAUSE  IT  TEACHES
YOU EVERYTHING  AND,  WHEN  YOU  LOSE  IT,  YOU  GET EVERYTHING.

4.  LIFE  IS  NOT  ABOUT  THE  PEOPLE  WHO  ACT  TRUE TO  YOUR FACE ……..
IT’S  ABOUT  THE  PEOPLE  WHO  REMAIN TRUE  BEHIND YOUR  BACK .

5.  IF  AN  EGG  IS  BROKEN  BY  AN  OUTSIDE  FORCE..A  LIFE ENDS. IF
AN  EGG  BREAKS  FROM  WITHIN…… .LIFE  BEGINS.
GREAT THINGS  ALWAYS  BEGIN  FROM  WITHIN .

6.  IT’S  BETTER  TO  LOSE  YOUR  EGO  TO  THE  ONE  YOU   LOVE. THAN
TO  LOSE  THE  ONE  YOU  LOVE ……. BECAUSE  OF   EGO .

7.   A  RELATIONSHIP  DOESN’T  SHINE  BY  JUST  SHAKING  HANDS
AT  THE  BEST OF TIMES. BUT  IT  BLOSSOMS  BY  HOLDING  FIRMLY
     IN  CRITICAL  SITUATIONS.

8. HEATED GOLD BECOMES ORNAMENTS. BETTED COPPER  BECOMES  WIRES.
DEPLETED  STONE  BECOMES  STATUE. SO, THE  MORE PAIN  YOU  GET  IN
YOUR LIFE THE MORE VALUABLE YOU BECOME.

9.  WHEN  YOU  TRUST  SOMEONE  TRUST  HIM  COMPLETELY  WITHOUT
ANY  DOUBT……. AT  THE  END  YOU  WOULD  GET  ONE  OF THE  TWO :
EITHER  A  LESSON  FOR  YOUR  LIFE  OR A VERY GOOD  PERSON .

10. WHY  WE  HAVE  SO  MANY  WORSHIP PLACES,  IF  GOD  IS  EVERYWHERE ?
A WISE  MAN  SAID : AIR   IS  EVERYWHERE, BUT WE STILL NEED A FAN TO  FEEL  IT

EXTREMELY BRILLIANT ! Play wise, Play fool to achieve your goal

There once lived a great mathematician in a village outside Ujjain . He was often called by the local king to advice on matters related to the economy. His reputation had spread as far as Taxila in the North and Kanchi in the South. So it hurt him very much when the village headman told him, "You may be a great mathematician who advises the king on economic matters but your son does not know the value of gold or silver."

The mathematician called his son and asked, "What is more valuable – gold or silver?" "Gold," said the son. "That is correct. Why is it then that the village headman makes fun of you, claims you do not know the value of gold or silver? He teases me every day. He mocks me before other village elders as a father who neglects his son. This hurts me. I feel everyone in the village is laughing behind my back because you do not know what is more valuable, gold or silver. Explain this to me, son."

So the son of the mathematician told his father the reason why the village headman carried this impression. "Every day on my way to school, the village headman calls me to his house. There, in front of all village elders, he holds out a silver coin in one hand and a gold coin in other. He asks me to pick up the more valuable coin. I pick the silver coin. He laughs, the elders jeer, everyone makes fun of me. And then I go to school. This happens every day. That is why they tell you I do not know the value of gold or silver."

The father was confused. His son knew the value of gold and silver, and yet when asked to choose between a gold coin and silver coin always picked the silver coin. "Why don't you pick up the gold coin?" he asked. In response, the son took the father to his room and showed him a box. In the box were at least a hundred silver coins. Turning to his father, the mathematician' s son said, "The day I pick up the gold coin the game will stop. They will stop having fun and I will stop making money."

The bottom line is :

Sometimes in life, we have to play the fool because our seniors and our peers, and sometimes even our juniors like it. That does not mean we lose in the game of life. It just means allowing others to win in one arena of the game, while we win in the other arena of the game. We have to choose which arena matters to us and which arenas do not.

Aid To Better Sneezing

Don't you hate it when your nose tingles, you feel a sneeze coming, you prepare, you close your eyes then nothing happens.

The sneeze passes away
And you wait for the sneeze to come but its suppressed now and you cant bring it back.
But at the back of your nose you have this feeling of dissatisfaction.
Here's an aid you could do every time a sneeze comes and be successful.
The secret really is to look at a bright object such as a lit bulb or the sun (Not for too long though, you might become blind), Wolla ! Easy as that.

No one really knows why this happens but as a part of a research it was found that by seeing a bright object the nervous system momentarily becomes really active and sends impulses to the lungs to blast out whatever dust it has out of the nose.
Try It...It really works !

Note: It is very dangerous to suppress a sneeze. It is a natural body mechanism that relieves you of harmful germs and dust.DO NOT suppress it.

Know What You Drink

This blog entry applies to Pakistan only.

Ever thought what you're drinking when you buy a 12 rupees juice in a tetra pack from the store in the locality. You open the fridge, grab a pack, pay for it and gulp it down and toss the pack in the bin.Now you try to taste the juice.Umm was it mango...no wait i bought an apple drink...its definitely apple...yeah i can sense it on my taste buds.

You go home satisfied wiping your mouth off.
Well you should be knowing that you're wrong !
How is that ? Let me explain.Lets re-wind the whole story. You buy an apple juice.
Ever see the contents. It says Tomato pulp more than apple pulp. Then its says apple essence and then theirs this number you dont know about?

Ever wonder that a glass holds 250ml of liquid. The pack label says its 250ml.
Ever made your own fresh apple juice. No ?
Well it takes at least 4 full size apples to squeeze and make a glass.
Ever went to the market and bought apples. No ?
Oh ! Come on there must be something you've done yourself.!
Well a Kilo costs 55 rupees an average in Pakistan.
And a Kilo makes hardly 2 glasses of juice.
How come the company pays for the tetra packing, the labor, the plant maintenance, delivery and still get a substantial profit out of a pack just for 12 rupees ?
Whereas two glasses of tetra packed juice cost 24 rupees to the consumer
Are they going in a loss ? Are they MAD ? Are they crazy ?
Well the answer is NO ! These corporate giants are pretty clever.

Groping through a long story the answer lies in CARROTS !
Yep ! Amazing as it seems but you all have been drinking carrot juice my friends because tomatoes just shot through 60 rupees a KG.Expensive than apples
And they too seem to be unfeasible.

Now carrots cost 2 rupees a KG in bulk....I mean when buying several hundred truck loads of bulk each day.
The carrots are crushed,apple/mango/pineapple essence added, preservatives added, packed, stored and then delivered to the market and at the end of the day the company gets a profit margin and you go home satisfied that you drank apple Juice.
So next time you buy a pack.Do KNOW and be aware that you are drinking carrot juice.

Note: All companies do not do this and is this a fact that is based not on a particular company. The juice may not be harmful as carrot juice is good for health and by the way who cares anyway. But the companies ought to mention this on the pack. The article was for general awareness !

END OF STORY.

11 Lessons

Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark.

  1. Don't miss the boat.

  2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.

  3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

  4. Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

  5. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

  6. Build your future on high ground.

  7. For safety's sake, travel in pairs.

  8. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

  9. When you're stressed, float awhile.

  10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

  11. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.
